Walnut Street Off Ramp to Close Starting Monday

Lewistown, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) issued an update on its East Charles Street highway resurfacing project in Mifflin County. The project will improve the ride quality and extend the life of nearly a mile of roadway and several ramps in Lewistown Borough and Derry Township.

Starting Monday, May 1, the contractor will close the off-ramp to Walnut Street, and traffic traveling Route 322/22 eastbound will continue approximately half a mile to the East Charles Street exit. Drivers will follow Route 3002 (East Charles Street), Route 22 (Juniata Street), and Route 1005 (Market/Valley Street) back to Route 1017 (Walnut Street). PennDOT anticipates this detour being in place until the close of business on Friday, May 5.

Drivers should build extra time into their travel schedules. PennDOT urges drivers to exercise caution, be alert for construction vehicles making sudden stops, obey posted speed limits, and always buckle up.

Overall work on this project includes pavement and concrete repair, drainage improvements, pavement markings, guide rail replacement, and miscellaneous items.

HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $1.1 million job, which PennDOT expects to wrap late in June. All work is weather dependent.

The contractor will implement detours during the later stages of the project. PennDOT will issue an update before the contractor implements any detours.
